I love it! I’ll never hear that verse at Compline quite the same. (-: Except the question is whether the cat is being vigilant or is the lion prowling around or both?!
I rather think we see the lion here – at certain times when hungry ones converged in the kitchen at meal times, my ex used to give the whole quote substituting ‘cat’ – as he fed them tid bits. (He was a great cat admirer).
I’m not prepared to cast him as the adversary. Though I’m quite sure his morals are a bit dodgy for a convent cat.
